Second Screen iPad app

Just read (via Twitter) a new post in the AVSforum.com on the Kaleidescape. In it the writer talks about accessing his movie library via his iPad Pro with an app called the "Second Screen iPad app". I've downloaded it and used it today. It's pretty nice. Gives the ability to see and sort your library. AND lets you start/play a movie. Anybody else using this?

It's my preferred method (when the stick remote isn't an option.) Just wish I could convince it to enable volume control.

So much easier to scroll through and find movies. And I love the ability to 'play' a movie right from the app.

It is Ahmad . I use it all the time to choose my movies for watching - rather than the on-screen display.

Thx for the answer

Great will have a look as a second option after crestron

I am using Crestron as well and find the app easier to use for finding movies, etc.

Howdy folks!

Happy to hear that you use and enjoy Second Screen. I'd be interested to know what features you most value, and what requests you might have for additions. Can't promise anything, but that sort of feedback is super valuable to us when we're planning upcoming development work.

Mike,

To me the best feature by far is the ability to select songs and play them immediately. The dream - the ability to make a playlist of music videos on the app. I know through scripts I can do this, but would absolutely love to be able to do this on the fly.

Second - and not exactly on the second screen app, but would be the ability on the iPhone app to select a movie, scene, and again a song directly instead of having to grab the iPad. (First world problems for sure). But I use my iPhone a lot with our system, and would love to be able to have a few of the same features on the phone app.

Thanks,
Pat

Mike, the main things I use 2nd Screen for are:

1. Marking and labeling custom scenes.
2. I have individual collections for all of my grandkids. I pick one of these and then pick cover art mode on the screen and hand the iPad to them to pick out a movie to watch. I also use this with having a movie night with friends that has all the latest New Releases for people to pick from.

Bug: In regards to item one above there is a bug when you mark more than one custom scene at once. You cannot go back and rename the scene of the first one - it doesn’t show on the screen when in edit mode. I hav to remember to rename the first scene before mark more scenes or go back and add a marked scene before the first scene as a dummy scene (that I can’t edit), edit the scene I want and then delete out the dummy scene.

Agree with the above comments. 2nd screen app is great. Use it for selecting and playing content, esp scenes or songs.

I would like to be able to play random scenes or random songs from my entire collection or from a specific category/genre/collection etc.

One thing that would be nice to remove is that it turns on a unit to view the data, but doesn’t turn it off….

Hi Mike,

I've always loved the Second Screen app - a somewhat unsung hero of the system IMHO, so I'm glad its getting some attention here!
It works great for me, so the only thing I'd suggest in terms of a change would be a fresh lick of paint in line with the iPhone app as its perhaps looking a little dated.
I'd also suggest featuring it on the website, as such slick integration would definitely be a selling point for me.

But what I'd most like to see is Second Screen's ability to view collections in cover view brought to the main OSD. Please make it happen!

Michael

Can some of you folks who are Second Screen fans say a little bit about your typical use cases? Are you using the app to browse your library while you're not in front of your TV or projection screen? Or do you use it while in your viewing zone? If the latter, for what activities do you prefer to use the second screen app versus the onscreen display, and why?

Thanks so much for your feedback so far.

Hey Mike,

I like using the covers view in the app for my various collections when selecting something to watch. As an example, my "Watch Soon" collection has hundreds of titles that are always in the same chronological order, and scrolling down through the titles on screen has grown a bit stale (always seeing the same order every time). To add a little freshness and life back to finding a new movie to watch, I use the covers view to see things from a different perspective.

Andy

I like to use it to select a next scene while watching another scene. Or browse for something to watch while watching something else. Only use it in the viewing zone and only while watching Kaleidescape content where using the onscreen interface would not be possible.
