Hi Folks, we have a current thread used discuss software updates, and you should continue to use that thread, here: Latest KoS Version & Changelog?, to post comments or ask questions, but the intent of this thread is provide the info K is willing (or able) to provide at that time, regarding the software release. It's also important to point out a couple of things:

1. Software updates are usually just minor bug fixes, or a minor adjustment to make a function work better, and no discussion is necessary.

2. Updates are rolled out in a specific sequence based on many factors, so not everyone gets the update at the same exact time, and it can be weeks before you see the update in your system. Complaining will not get it to you faster.🤪

3. Some updates reported by owners, i.e. "My system updated today to........" may not be ready for a general release, and may be related to something the owner previously reported, or perhaps a beta function, etc.. (see #2 above), so don't worry if your system doesn't update to that version as you might expect, if it's meant for your system it will eventually show up.

4. Updates may include code for future functionality, or enhancements, and K may not comment on this until they're ready to Beta, or release to all owners, so asking for more info will likely go unanswered, and K apologizes in advance, but that's the policy, so please be patient.

Just to reiterate, I would like this thread to be used ONLY by Kaleidescape personnel to post a comment about the update. This way we can all see the release numbers in order, and can see what's included in the release without having to read through 5 pages to get the answer. I will either delete, or move any posts by members, so please don't be offended if that happens. (Yes, you can "likes" but please don't comment.)

Thanks folks!

Jim

Howdy folks!

kOS 10.9.0 has been rolling out to customers in recent days. This release contains the usual assortment of bug fixes and improvements, plus two major new features.

  1. Movie rentals! Starting tomorrow (January 26), movie rentals will be available on Strato players. Like purchased movies, Kaleidescape rentals are downloaded in full resolution, not streamed. You'll see rental options appear within the store interface on web, mobile, and in the Strato onscreen display.

You will have 30 days to start watching a rented movie. Once you start watching, you will have 48 hours to enjoy the movie. Note that a rented movie can be downloaded to only one home at a time, and watched on only one player at a time. If you decide after viewing the movie that you want to own it, and you purchase it within 30 days of the rental transaction, half the rental price will be applied toward the purchase.

Please read our FAQ to learn more about this new feature.

  2. We've also made significant improvements in how hard drive failures are handled for Terra servers. If a hard drive fails in a Terra server that's running 10.9.0 or later, and if there is enough room available on that server (or other Terra servers in the same system), then the system will immediately begin downloading the affected movies so that disruption to your library is minimized. As well, there are email and mobile app notifications as well as messages in the onscreen display and on the web store, and the status of your content restoration will be viewable within the download queue interface on both web and mobile. Note that we do reserve space on the system for new purchases and rentals, so a restoration won't completely fill up the system and leave you unable to get new movies. It will pause restoration until the failed drive is replaced, if necessary.

kOS 10.9.1-22013 is mainly a patch release. This kOS release includes the following notable new features:
  • A redesigned Strato Video configuration page with improvements including:
    • added the ability to use CinemaScape when using the “Use External Scaler” mode
    • added new “HDMI Color Sampling” settings to the Advanced Config section
  • Improvements to the Audio configuration page
  • Improvements to the warning and error messages displayed by the Browser Interface
Notable bug fixes in this release:
  • Fixed issue that could cause playback authorizations to timeout on systems with large libraries

How do you force the update? I’m still on the old one. Thank you.
I restarted my Terra and Stratos but no luck. Hope to have this update soon. I’m still on kOS 10.9.0-21934 on January 21.
We do staged rollouts for software updates so not all systems have the update available to them just yet. For this update, most systems should have the update available to them by the end of next week.

Hi John,

Assuming that you are using an external scaler to up/downscale content, then yes, “allow display mode changes (use external scaler)” + ”Prefer 60 Hz onscreen” is what you want.

In terms of color sampling, this is really there to help out with certain video processors and components that perform better with particular color format. All of the content is 4:2:0 except for the OSD, which is 4:4:4. So in terms of actual movies, you‘re losing no data — it’s just about how it’s packaged.

I moved all posts by members over to the software discussion thread (Latest KoS Version & Changelog?). This thread is only being used by Kaleidescape personnel to post info on software changes. To discuss these changes, please visit the discussion thread.

I have these two separate threads to:

1. Make it easier for a K Rep to quickly post change info.
2. Make it easier for members to see info related to each software change (don't have to read through a bunch of posts to locate info).

I know it's a bit of a pain to move to another thread to post comments, but I really want this thread to remain clear of member comments, so if you'd like to post a comment, please do so in the thread noted above.

Jim

kOS 10.9.2-22102 is a patch release with the following fixes:
  • Improved the performance of loading the “All Movies” view and other large collections on the OSD store
  • Fixed bug that could cause Stratos to crash when updating the HDMI EDID during playback of UHD/HDR content
  • Fixed bug that prevented systems from automatically rebooting to apply a software update if the store download queue is populated and paused.
  • Fixed bug causing the settings popup to be rendered incorrectly on mobile browsers
  • Various browser interface layout fixes.

kOS 10.10.0-22271
Posting for continuity reasons and sharing @MikeKobb post. @cinelife hope OK with you.

"Primarily under-the-hood changes, but there are a few things that may visibly affect some customers:
  1. One change that should improve things for customers using certain control systems is that sending the LEAVE_STANDBY command will also bring the system out of idle mode. Previously, it was possible to bring a player out of standby but have its video output still be muted because the system was also idle.
  2. We've added the ability to use CinemaScape when scaling is being performed by an external scaler. This means it's now possible to have the wide-screen OSD when using an external scaler.
  3. There have been some updates made to some of the advanced options in the player video configuration."

Any update here on 10.10.? This has been one of the slower updates to roll out to systems. Still on 10.9.2 on all Encore systems.

There were some late breaking defects found that caused us to halt the rollout until we could issue a fix. Namely:
  • Issues with playback of some unbookmarked Blu-ray disc content
  • Delivery disk ingestion on Marine systems was not functioning correctly.
These issues have been address and the rollout restarted (with 10.10.0-22350). However given that last weekend was a holiday weekend for both Canada and the US, the rollout was held until this week.

All good now, but had some craziness trying to install some new components in my system. Right in the middle of things, the system started upgrading various components to the latest firmware. I was in my network locking in IP addresses (for my control system) and I saw the components changing them to addresses outside of my network. Likely part of the firmware process when they connect to K. Was crazy. Network errors kept coming up in the web GUI. Finally decided to walk away and let it all settle down. Which it did!

Some notable new features for kOS 10.11.0-22557:
  • Support for for Lutron HomeWorks lighting/shade installations. Movie playback events, like start of movie, intermission, credits, etc. can be linked to Lutron lighting scenes. Settings are on the new "Lighting & Shades" tab of the popup settings in the browser interface for Strato and Alto devices.
  • Support for Terra (Compact).
  • Onscreen collection place enhancements. Empty collections are no longer displayed on the OSD. Adding a movie to an empty collection will display the collection. Hidden collections are still accessible on the "Add to Collection" menu on a movie's Detail Sheet and also on the browser interface.
  • New video configuration option to further reduce mode changes before/after playback of 50Hz content. In the Advanced Video Settings section, under OSD Refresh Rate, there is now an option for, "Do not change display mode after playback".
  • Refined display of HDMI video diagnostic states.

I believe that there will be more detailed posts explaining some of these new features but in a nutshell notable features in this release include:
  • OSD Collections (10.12.0 and 8.8.0)
    • New and Played collections
      • 'Played’ collection has been added
      • Movies will be moved from ‘New’ to the ‘Played’ collection once played past the end credits bookmark
      • User can manually move movies between New/Played collections via the browser interface either singly or in bulk
      • Co-Star support for Played collection
    • The ‘Scenes’ collection will now only list titles with user created scenes (since pretty much every movie has Kaleidescape-defined scenes
    • The ‘Extras’ collection has been removed
  • OSD Global Search (10.12.0 only)
    • You can now search your local library for titles, people, and genres
    • Menu item added to the Kaliedescape menu for searching library
    • New GO_SEARCH control protocol command has been added to execute a search via control systems.
  • Network Discoverability
    • Apple - Systems will always be reachable by the shared hostname http://my-kaleidescape.local, or http://my-premiere.local
    • When both a Premiere and an Encore system are on the same network, http://my-kaleidescape.local will *always* load the BI for the Encore system and http://my-premiere.local will load the BI for the Premiere system.
    • Windows - Components running 10.12.0 or later will now appear in the Network tab of Windows Explorer (when network discoverability is enabled). Selecting a component will open the browser interface for the system.
  • Other performance improvements and bug fixes

Can one presume there will be updates to control drivers to support the new features? (Ie RTI?)

hoping they’ve added things like genre filtering among the new features, to limit the OSD to certain categories of movies should you desire.

kOS 10.12.1-23009 has the following fixes:
  • Fix for an HDMI interop problem with certain Sony TVs with the latest firmware
  • Fix for elevated black/crushed white levels during 60Hz HDR playback
  • Fix for rare issue where Terra could reset due to large power draw when spinning up 18 TB drives out of idle mode.

Also, please note that we have paused rollout of this release because a potential issue has been seen. We'll resume once we've investigated and (potentially) addressed that issue.
