24TB hard drive failure

tnedator

Well-known member
just got a message on screen hard drive 1 had failed or is missing.

How much are replacement hard drives? I'm assuming I can't just add a non KS hard drive.

You cannot replace a failed drive with a non-K drive. The only drive available from K for the 1U or 3U servers is the 6TB drive. If the drive is under warranty, K will replace it. Retail in the US is $895, and tends to be higher outside the US. Contact your dealer for assistance in ordering the drive. (If you're in the US, and don't have a dealer, and want help getting a replacement, you can reach me by email (cinelifellc@gmail.com) and I'll process the order for you. If you'd rather use a dealer in your area, send me your location and I'll put you in touch with a local dealer. Alternatively, you can contact K sales directly and they can also process the order (but expect to pay retail).

You might also look into buying a used drive if someone has a used drive in the size you need, and it has been reinitialized (or is new).

Just curious, but would Encore products give a message if a drive failed? Not sure if users can replace a Strato drive, but how about a Terra where the drives are just in bays? Thanks. SJ

It turns out the OP has a Terra drive failure (I wasn't sure if the 24TB reference was for Premiere or the Terra 24TB), and he did receive the Alert 'on-screen," as he noted. He is likely still under warranty. My understanding based on prior discussions with K is that the Terra drives are "field replaceable."

Sorry, thought I had put Terra in the thread title, but failed to do that.

I also assumed a one year warranty. I have two Terra's. One 2.5 years old and the other 4 years old, give or take. I believe the unit with the failed drive is the newer unit! So hopefully in warranty. .

Jim's understanding is correct. Terra HDDs are field replaceable. However, unlike Premiere systems, the system doesn't rebuild the drive to restore the missing content from the failed drive. Instead, the store will display a notification that there is content missing from your system. You can then view the list of missing content and queue some or all of it for redownload.

Thanks for that info John!
