D2D for SD to HD Price

TrackZ

Well-known member
Hello. Can someone comment on the D2D cost for going from SD DVD to HD digital rights? Thanks.

Pricing is all over the place, nothing is standard, so obviously the studios are controlling pricing to some extent. Disney is the most expensive, seems to be close to retail prices (as usual for them, but likely because they don't really recognize (accept?) the persistent copies we own on K's Server's). I've got some movies that are as low as $8.99 and as high as $21.99 (all non-Disney), and many in the $18.00 range.

Not sure if that's what you're looking for, let me know if I didn't answer your question.

Jim

That $8.99 was as low as $5.99 in the past, but the $5.99 now seems reserved for disc to digital (same resolution), with the purpose of being able to remove disc based Blu-ray's from the Vault.

Jim

BD to HD digital is $5.99 across the board where D2D is offered. I presume DVD to HD digital is a hair more with a standard price. Perhaps that's the $8.99 then.

Is there any BD disc to 4K/HDR digital or DVD disc to 4K/HDR digital upgrade path? And if so how do those discounts look compared to buying the 4K movie outright on encore?

Yes, there is a BD to 4K upgrade path, it seems to range from $11.99 to $15.99 depending on the studio. I *think* there is an SD to 4K path too, but I don’t know what the prices are.

Correct, that's what I referred to in my second answer above ($5.99), and the "hair more" appears to be the additional $3.00 (to $8.99) for many, but not all, titles.

A few examples from my Store account: (I'm just grabbing the first few I see listed.)

Aliens in the Attic: DVD > HD $21.99
All About Steve: DVD > HD $21.99
Along Came Polly DVD > HD $8.99
Around the World in 80 Days (Chan version): DVD > HD $19.99 (Disney)
Bambi: DVD > HD $26.99
The Boondock Saints II : BR > SD (going down in resolution) $15.99
Castaway: DVD > HD $17.99
Chocolat: DVD > HD $23.99

Regarding upgrades to UHD/HDR, seems to be $13.99 DVD > HDR.

I don't have many SD (store downloads), just a few kids movies, and these are not available in higher resolutions.

TrackZ's statement is more accurate that my initial response that prices are "all over the place," as there is clearly more uniform pricing than I noticed in scanning my offers. As I looked closer (not something I normally spend time doing), most are exactly what he posted, I just happened to have a few titles that are not standard, and I just assume that's studio driven.

Lastly, it isn't necessarily a uniform increase based on resolutions upgrades, and I assume that's a studio decision as well. One example in my account is The DaVinci Code DVD > UHD $13.99, while Dan in Real Life DVD > HD is $16.99.

Anyway, it is what it is, some titles are really just a re-buy of the same title, but at least we have the best playback devices currently available.

Yeah, the prices are all over the place because it's studio dependent. Some of those quoted are not truly D2D offers as they are offering you the movie at full store price. It doesn't matter that you had the disc.

Fox - Aliens in the Attic: DVD > HD $21.99
Fox - All About Steve: DVD > HD $21.99
NBCU - Along Came Polly DVD > HD $8.99
Disney - Around the World in 80 Days (Chan version): DVD > HD $19.99 (Disney)
Disney - Bambi: DVD > HD $26.99
The Boondock Saints II : BR > SD (going down in resolution) $15.99
Fox - Castaway: DVD > HD $17.99
Paramount - Chocolat: DVD > HD $23.99

If I break the above list down:

  • Disney offers no D2D at all of theirs are just full price purchases.
  • Fox offers $6.99 to go from BD to HD, but Fox doesn't offer discount upgrading resolution. So Fox BD to UHD is full price.
  • NBCU is a good one. They charge $6.99 BD to HD and $11.99 for BD to UHD. Looks like it's $8.99 then for DVD to HD.
  • Sony generally has similar pricing to NBCU as well as Lionsgate.
  • Warner offers $6.99 for BD to HD and $15.99 for BD to UHD.
  • Paramount is usually the same as Warner; however, not all titles are D2D. In the case above, Chocolat is not D2D so it's just giving you full price.
  • MGM doesn't offer it. Most of the smaller studio doesn't either.

All accurate, and good points. I suspect it will be like this going forward, but it would be a great incentive/help for people considering a move to Strato/Terra if they could replace content at better prices, but of course the studios don't factor that in to their pricing.

I tried with Lionsgate titles the other day (BR to 4K) and it didn't offer any upgrade price (I tried with The Gentleman). Is it title dependent? I can try a couple others today and see.

That title shows rights held by STX and that D2D is not available. I have D2D'd BD to UHD titles from Lionsgate for $11.99.

For knowing what kind of D2D is available, you can look at the web store and verify the Studio and the D2D tag to know what to expect per the various studio rulings I posted above. But if something is D2D not available, then no discounted offer is made at all. It'll just be full price.

Weird. It is a Lionsgate release. Just did the same with Ex Machina and same thing. It is a Liknsgate release too (A24 films).

Those are instances where studios partnered with Lionsgate (or Universal, for the Gentleman) only for physical distribution. They do their own distribution for digital releases, and as a result don't have D2D.
