Why did they release aqua man in 1:78? I thought I saw it was going to be 2:40. I have a 2:35 scope screen and I hate it when they reslease movies in 1:78 or 1:85. 😁
 
Probably because that's the aspect ratio set for the Blu-ray and DVD version, because of the IMAX scenes. (There is a 2:40 (actually 2:39) version, but not yet released as far as I know.)

I just took a look and it is mainly 2.39:1 but there are IMAX scenes that are mixed in at 1.78:1.

That's good to know, haven't seen the movie yet. The official technical spec's for that film, per IMDb, shows the following for Aspect Ratio:

Aspect Ratio
1.43 : 1 (IMAX 70mm & Laser Versions: most scenes)
1.78 : 1 (IMAX Blu-Ray & DVD version: most scenes)
1.90 : 1 (IMAX version: most scenes)
2.39 : 1

Given you've confirmed that much of the movie is 2:39, with some 1.78 scenes, that's the answer!

Now that I have watched the whole movie I have to modify this. The first four chapters are all 2:39. However, beginning with chapter 5 the movie is mostly 1.78. All the under water scenes are in 1.78 (which is a lot of the movie) there are some land based scenes in the middle of the movie (around chapter 12 & 13) are 2.39. So this movie has mostly 1.78 AR.

I will say that the HDR video is spectacular! The movie was very enjoyable - but this is my type of movie.

Thanks guys. Will watch this Friday night with the family. It will be interesting to see how the panamorph DCR lens works with the 1:78 under water scenes

Regarding aspect ratios that change during the movie, It is my understanding that kaleidescape will NOT communicate this aspect change to the screen masking.

Can anyone confirm this?

This is correct. Aspect ratios and screen mask settings are set on a "play item" level and thus only one set of values can be defined per play item. So in the case where a movie download includes the movie, a trailer, and some extras, we can set different aspect ratio and masking trim values for the movie, the trailer, and the extras but we can't set two different aspect ratios or change the masking trim values for just the movie play item.

The HD version came in full 2:40:1 I wish we get the same in HDR
