I think I looked at this as as way of "re-intregrating" into HDMI and I concluded it doesnt work without a modification because it doesn't seem to have the 3 multichannel coax inputs. The receivers that do the decoding don't pass the decoded LPCM along. And to get that decoded LPCM on HDMI you need to do it in the player- so we're back to where we began.

Now, if we could modify a black box such as this to make those analog outputs into digital inputs and then somehow stick that onto the HDMI stream.....

Honestly, if you have a high end system that you love, if its a traditional analog out to your amps and speakers, its probably easier to get a nice decoding receiver that has preamps out and then find a way to integrate it into your existing setup.

Some more observations:

The sound when comparing to my Dune streamer is easily a step better- and after more and more listening, I prefer the sound over the Oppo. I believe this is because my Meridian processor has more advanced de-jittering on its inputs than does the Meridian HDMI processor that I use in conjunction with the Oppo.

What is a Dune streamer?

Thats the old box- they have newer ones. They are quite impressive for the money, but their interface and user experience is completely bare bones. But they decode all the formats internally....

I also own a Meridian 861v6 / HD621...

Has K started decoding in their players yet? I'm primarily interested in K for music concerts so this is pretty important to me.

Thanks!

Not yet, and given that just about every AVR or Prepro designed and built in the past couple of years decodes internally, they may never add that capability. (No inside knowledge, just my guess.)

The problem still exists for some of us. I think unfortunately if you are in our position you have to do what I did which is to get an external processor basically made.

To my knowledge there are no external boxes/ AVRs/ even processors that will decode the high res formats from an HDMI input and then pass along the decoded audio as PCM back on an HDMI output.... And I do look.

In my case I have the Meridian speakers so Im really wedded to their system. Otherwise I could just swap out the processor. Perhaps Meridian will update the 621 with decoding abilities? (I have no idea)
